What’s the deal with diamonds anyway?

Diamonds seem like the default choice for engagement rings today - but that wasn't always the case.
Before the 20th century, people were engaged in all sorts of things: rubies, sapphires, Opals or simply simple gold rings. Diamonds were rare, expensive and mostly reserved for the nobility.

So what happened?

The great diamond myth (spoiler: pure advertising - not for us)

The British company started in 1938 De Beers one of the most successful advertising campaigns of all time.
Your goal? Creating demand for diamonds.
Your method? Emotional manipulation.

They hired a US advertising agency to make the diamond the ultimate symbol of eternal love.
In 1947 the time had come: the legendary sentence was born:

“A Diamond is Forever”

You've probably heard this saying - it was written by the copywriter Frances Gerety for a De Beers ad.

The campaign convinced entire generations that an engagement ring only with diamond “real” is. In the 80s there were around 80% of all engagement rings have diamonds occupied.

But hand on heart: That never had anything to do with love - but with Marketing.

The Dark Side of Diamonds (Let's Be Honest)

We're not here to badmouth diamonds - but we want to Transparency, alternatives and awareness create. Because there are some points that should be talked about:

• Price pressure: The “two months salary” rule?
  Invented – also by De Beers.

• Ethical concerns: Many diamonds come from Conflict regions or are mined under questionable conditions.

• Environmental damage: Mining destroys ecosystems and consumes huge amounts of resources.

• Interchangeability: Honestly – a lot of diamond rings look… the same. Where is the soul?
